Situated in the heart of New Zealand’s North Island, Rotorua is a geothermal wonderland with a rich cultural heritage. The region is famed for its bubbling mud pools, steaming geysers, and natural hot springs, as well as its vibrant Maori community.

With a plethora of outdoor activities on offer, Rotorua is a true bucket-list destination, and housing visitors from near and far is an extraordinary array of tranquil accommodations.

From lakefront boutiques to quaint family-run lodges, here are my favourite cool and unusual hotels in Rotorua, New Zealand (in no particular order)

The Pullman invites you to unwind in the heart of Rotorua’s geothermal paradise. This luxurious hotel is the ultimate base for all types of travellers, from families seeking adventure to business delegates attending conferences.

With its 130 lavish rooms and suites, a rejuvenating day spa, an energizing gym, and five dynamic meeting rooms, this chic hotel offers an all-encompassing experience.

I thought the natural scenery surrounding the hotel was incredible, and it consisted of shooting geysers, bubbling muds, and magical forests, creating a surreal atmosphere that you won’t find anywhere else.

I enjoyed savouring modern New Zealand cuisine at the in-house Barrel & Co., where passionate chefs showcase the region’s best through creative grill dishes.

As I arrived at Solitaire I was struck by the beauty of its tranquil location, perched on a narrow peninsula overlooking the breathtaking Lake Tarawera.

From the acclaimed on-site restaurant to the stylishly rustic interiors, every aspect of the lodge emanates a refined elegance.

The historic paintings of the nearby volcanic Mount Tarawera in the lounge-bar reminded me of the lodge’s fascinating history, and the ambiance here is perfectly geared towards socializing.

As a guest you can take advantage of complimentary kayaks, dinghies and fishing gear, and even indulge in experiences like in-room spa treatments or once-in-a-lifetime helicopter trips.

Our suite came with its own lounge area and spa bath, making for a relaxing family refuge. The locally sourced, seasonal cuisine at The Mains, the property’s restaurant, accompanies epic lake views from a stunning terrace.

Don’t miss the opportunity to meet the furry friends on the property – miniature horses, sheep, donkeys, chickens, and “Smokey” the cat!

This charming hotel and its gardens are perched on the shore of Lake Rotorua, perfectly situated for you to visit the local tourist attractions.

Named after the birds frolicking on the lake below, the interior aesthetic is both eye-catching and soul-soothing. Black and white furnishings ornate the communal spaces, and the English-style garden offers the most idyllic space to recline after an action-packed day.

I thoroughly enjoyed being picked up by the hotel’s jetty and embarking on fishing expeditions, before returning to a hearty, homemade dinner in the evening. The 9 rooms continue the monochrome theme, and come with either lake or garden views.

I thought this hotel was the perfect spot to dive into the wonderland of adventure that characterizes Rotorua.

Dating back to 1897, this waterfront masterpiece offers three thermally heated pools, a private plunge pool, and a sauna. The chic, sophisticated guestrooms were designed to offer guests a restful and opulent night’s sleep, and the charming mix of traditional and modern elements adds a quirky touch.

The on-site Duke’s Bar and Restaurant, a century-old establishment, is one of my favourite Rotorua eateries, and the award-winning chefs utilize the freshest local ingredients to craft mouth-watering dishes. The impeccable décor and cool vibe at the bar set the scene for a relaxed and playful experience.

Oakridge Glamping invites you to experience the beauty of nature without sacrificing comfort or convenience. It is a place where elegance meets the great outdoors.

Each beautifully appointed tent boasts a plush king-sized bed, luxurious linens, and eco-friendly amenities. For me, the stand-out experience here was waking up to the sounds of birdsong and the gentle rustling of leaves, as I stepped onto my private deck to take in the jaw-dropping countryside views.

There’s a handful of cosy open-air hangout spaces here, graced by a rustic charm and topped with lavish seating areas. Around Oakridge, every visual frame is filled with the verdant majesty of the surrounding terrain.

Ngamihi Lodge beckons discerning guests to experience luxury and nature to the fullest, from a design-led B&B overlooking the serene Lake Okareka.

With its half an acre of gardens, wrap-around decks with outdoor seating areas, and lake boats available for hire, we were able to totally let our stresses melt away here and surrender to the rhythms of ‘lake life’.

As a guest you can embark on a memorable adventure with activities such as fishing, cycling, kayaking, and horse riding at your disposal.

A stand-out experience for me however was immersing myself in the rich Maori culture with a guided tour of Rotorua’s cultural sites.

Luxury meets tranquillity at this exotic nature-inspired escape, quietly nestled within rolling parklands dotted with native bush.

A stunning backdrop of Mount Ngongotaha sets a serene tone here, and inside, an ambience of comfort, elegance, and tropical splendour abounds.

I opted for the Hamurana Suite, whose native bush backdrop and exquisite Citta linens made for a blissful, harmonious stay.

I loved waking up the sounds of native birds and farm animals as I sipped my first coffee on my private outdoor patio. Other offerings here include a serene guest lounge, a state-of-the-art fitness centre, a heated outdoor swimming pool, and a sauna.

This peaceful bucolic B&B offers a tranquil scape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The luxurious guestrooms are thoughtfully designed with a unique blend of modern amenities and traditional décor, creating a serene, welcoming atmosphere.

I loved waking up in my intricately decorated room to the soothing sounds of tweeting birds, before savouring a delicious breakfast on the picturesque outdoor terrace.

To retreat to a slower pace of life, you can make use of either the shared lounge or the peaceful garden, both of which are adorned with cosy seating areas and topped with an exceptional, bespoke service.

Our room was accompanied by a private hardwood veranda, which made for an intimate setting amid the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. The hotel’s dedication to providing an authentic New Zealand experience is evident in the range of activities available.

Whether you choose to take a refreshing dip in the open-air hot tub, explore the lake in a canoe, or take a communal trip to the geothermal hot springs, you will certainly leave Koura Lodge feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and inspired.

Situated next to the famous Redwoods Forest and a mere 5-minutes from Rotorua’s town centre, this eclectic B&B offers a tranquil escape in the heart of the countryside.

The host, a seasoned traveller with extensive local knowledge, welcomed me with cake upon arrival and wine & nibbles in the evening, as she shared some of the stories from her adventures.

My guestroom was dressed in an elegant style, and topped many colourful cushions, exuding a homely atmosphere. Beyond the property’s lush, manicured garden are many hiking and cycling trails, where you’ll feel worlds away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
