Although it’s sometimes overlooked in favor of neighboring Montana and Oregon, Hemingway’s favorite state is home to a serious amount of beauty. In fact, it’s probably up there as being one of the USA’s most underrated destinations.

The scenery here is mostly made up of wilderness but with a network of truly stunning razor-edged peaks, gushing rivers, dramatic gorges, deep valleys, wonderful waterfalls, and welcoming small towns punctuating the unspoiled landscape.

It’s hard to know where to start in such a list but I’ve tried my best and here is my choice for the best and most beautiful places to visit in Idaho…

1. Boise – the state’s capital and largest city is said to be one of the best places for millennials to live in the US Boise - best places to visit in Idaho

This capital city is also known as the city of trees and is one of the best spots to visit in Idaho. Named by the 19th-century French Canadian trappers, this wooded river became a distinct landmark due to the oasis dominated by cottonwood trees.

A nature lover’s paradise, you’ll love the time spent among rivers, mountains, canyons, deserts, and lakes with all sorts of recreational activities.

Also, a great place to go sightseeing, the bustling downtown is a cultural epicenter with the Idaho State Capitol and the Classic Egyptian Theatre and home to many small businesses.

Full of incredibly welcoming people, chic cafes, and quirky shops, this mid-sized city retains the charm of a small town.

Other scenic highlights of the park include steep canyons, alpine rivers, thick forests, and wildlife including bears, wolves, bison, elk, and antelope.

The majestic Perrine Bridge along the canyon provides a striking view. On the northeast lies of the city of Twin Falls is the alluring Shoshone Falls.

The town itself is charming with some great places to shop, visit and stay as well. Take a walk along the waterfront and then take a swim or go for a cruise instead. In the winter there are seasonal events including ice sculpture displays.

With the alluring basalt spectacle and multiple viewpoints, visitors can see the dramatic features of the Snake River on the constructed platform that extends over the water.

The pristine blue waters and small beaches come with some of the best water activities. At its northern end is the beautiful city of Coeur d’Alene.

13. Lava Hot Springs – the mineral pools here are an awesome tourist attraction in both summer and winter

A small hidden gem in Bannock County which is a tourist attraction due to its incredible mineral pools which draw people from many other states too.

The pools also vary in temperature to suit everyone’s needs but if you’re visiting in summer it’s best to take a dip in the early morning or in the evening.

Even though it still retains its small-town vibe there are a few other things to do here including a few outdoor activities such as hiking, zipping, and tubing down the river which passes through the heart of the town from about mid-May to mid-September.

There’s also a historic downtown area and a few great places to eat and stay.

  • Have some fun by hiring a tube to float down the Portneuf River on.
  • Check out the Olympic Swimming Pool & Waterpark, filled with waterslides, splash pads, diving platforms and pools.
  • Take a dip in the pools filled with natural hot mineral water, with five to chose from there’s space for everyone to enjoy.

14. Hells Canyon – North America’s deepest river gorge and a stunning attraction to visit in Idaho

Encompassing the remote region of Idaho and Oregon, the Hells Canyon was carved by the meandering water of the Snake River.

Featuring dramatic terrains, elevation, and climate, this gorgeous landscape contains acres of beauty and adventure.

The protected area around the Hells Canyon, the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area was created in 1975.

Hemmed by the jagged cliffs and snow-covered Seven Devils Mountain, the scenic wilderness is ideal for a hike or mountain bike ride. Definitely one of the state’s most beautiful places to visit!

Today, the historic Wallace offers much world-class recreation along with the area’s colorful history.

Enjoy the underground mine tours, mine museums, logging, mountain bike, and snowmobile trail on the Forest Service roads against the backdrop of lush green forests.

This is a unique spot to visit in Idaho as it’s home to the tallest freestanding sand dunes in North America – the highest measures a very large 470 feet.

There’s a small entrance fee and it’s higher if you stay overnight but it’s worth it as the views here are just stunning.

Located in Owyhee County in southwestern Idaho here you can hike, camp, rent a sandboard, or gaze at the stars in Idaho’s only public observatory located right in the park.

It’s a known fact that Idaho has a connoisseur of beautiful small towns to visit in America and Stanley – a gorgeous hidden gem – is no exception.

Located in Custer County of Idaho, Stanley is the ideal place for a quiet retreat. At the base of the Sawtooth Mountains is the serene Stanley Lake.

Regardless of the season, there is plenty to capture in lovely Stanley. From the incredible sunset vistas, hot springs to the summer greenery, and beautiful fall foliage, the tranquillity of Stanley Lake is a heaven for nature lovers.

20. Driggs – a place where you can really get away from it all

This is a wonderful small resort town which is pretty low-key (in comparison with other resort towns in Idaho) so a perfect vacation destination if you really want to get away from it all.

It’s the hub of Teton Valley, marking the crossroads to Grand Targhee Ski Resort and here you can go skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoe walking. 

The town has some independent shops, eateries, and places to stay and there are plenty of endless surrounding mountain trails.

Wallace is one of the coolest towns in Idaho. It has a well preserved historic downtown where moose roam freely around the streets and lots of gorgeous surrounding scenery. It also has plenty of quirky  places too including lots of interesting shops and attractions including a historic brothel turned museum! Add in some great independent eateries, a unique wine bar and a hip place to grab breakfast and you easily have one of the coolest towns in the state. 

2. Where in Idaho should you not live?

The small town of Garden City in Idaho has a scarily high crime and has the dubious reputation of being the most dangerous city in the state. It only has a population of around 12,000 but the crime rate is nearly double the national average with a ratio of 688 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. That means the crime rate is higher than 96% of the state’s cities and towns of all sizes.

Although it’s often overlooked in favour of its neighbouring states, Idaho is full of interesting places and attractions. Some of the best include the Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve, Shoshone Falls, the Sun Valley Resort, Lava Hot Springs, Idaho Falls, Sawtooth National Recreation Area and of course the world famous Yellowstone National Park part of which resides in Idaho State.

Although Idaho is a great state to visit all year round, one of the best times to visit is around the fall time from late September right though to the end of October. Temperatures are much cooler and more comfortable than the summer and the fall scenery in the state is spectacular. You’ll also find lots of fun events and festivals this time of year as well as great deals on accommodation. 

5. Why should I visit Idaho?

Idaho is a more low-key tourist destination than its neighboring states but there are many great reasons to visit. Yellowstone National Park is the biggest draw but Idaho is also home to other beautiful National Parks, pristine lakes, interesting wildlife, hot springs, 3,100 miles of navigable whitewater and dark night skies perfect for star gazing. In fact, the International Dark-Sky Association recently granted silver-tier International Dark Sky Park status to Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve.
